Relaxation can be so problematic when you have a chronic illness. Something so simple like a body spritz could be the key to re-balance harmony and a natural balance to your life.
As an aromatherapist when I suggest the magic of oils people presume massage is the only method of application yet there are many. For the purpose of this blog, I will show you how to make a body spritz that can replace your usual perfume.
Essential oils affect the delicate sensory cells located in the lining of the nasal cavity. The essence of the smell is carried to the limbic area of the brain via the bloodstream. The aroma given off has a direct effect on our emotions. Molecules are also carried into the lungs where they are able to diffuse across the single-celled walls of the alveoli into the bloodstream.
I just call it witchcraft or magic smelly stuff, aroma magic, it is far easier to understand to the lay person.
It doesn't really matter what we call it or if we truly understand the molecular structures of a single drop of rose otto, what matters is that it does work. Aromatherapy has been working within society for thousands of years.
Why within modern life do we prefer to spray chemicals on our skin, spray them around our home and use toxic plugin chemical fresheners?
Essential oils can be purchased at health food stores, aromatherapy shops and through various online retailers. Since essential oils evaporate easily and can be damaged by light and very hot or cold temperatures, be sure to store them in tightly stopped, dark glass bottles in a cool, dark place. I have a super old wooden oils box for mine, I keep them in my wardrobe away from sunlight and heat as they are also highly flammable.
In my blends, I always use vodka (plain, not flavoured) as a preservative and carrying agent. Basically, it helps maintain the integrity of the synergistic blend. (You need a high-proof alcohol) Don't substitute gin, rum or other spirits since they have powerful fragrances that would affect the blend and spoil the desired outcome.
You can also use the cheapest vodka in the shop, don't worry about buying the best quality as the outcome is still the same. Remember we are spraying it NOT drinking it!
100mls spray bottle (mine is from Wilkos)
You will need:
Small bottle of Vodka
We are making what is called a synergistic blend so we use oils containing top notes, middle notes and bottle notes. A general rule of thumb is 1 drop of essential oil per 10 mls. Blends can be made with strengths ranging from 0.5% to 3% but I prefer to keep it simple as many readers may be aromatherapy novices.
Fill the spray bottle with the vodka and based upon a 1 drop per 10 mls you will add 2 drops of Lemon Grass, 4 drops of Rose Otto and 4 drops of Ylang Ylang. Give the bottle a little shake and then you are ready to spray.
I always advise a patch test of you are not accustomed to essential oils. Spray it on your clothes, your bedding, the room. The aroma is divine and so calming.
